News Release BOOK YOUR OWN TEST (BYOTest) By PHD DX Inc Patients to get Direct Access to Lab Tests One of the requirements of Canadian health care reform is giving consumers the tools to prevent disease and ensure their wellness. In November 2008, a company called PHD Dx Inc. launched a new direct-to-consumer lab test program called BYOTest® (Book Your Own Test) designed to help them do just that. Being able to use various ultrasound scans and laboratory testing to measure wellness and screen for asymptomatic disease will go a long way to liberate them from the shackles of the current disease care model. Patients Would Like Greater Control Patients willing to take greater control have access to an increasing array of medical tests to assess the state of their health. Direct medical testing can help them circumvent lengthy waits in an overburdened system and avoid costly health problems by identifying conditions early. Patients will also be able to work more effectively with other health care providers such as nurse practitioners, naturopaths, nutritionists and osteopaths. They will receive the written results themselves and should then discuss them with their primary health care provider, particularly when the test results indicate cause for concern. Routine Testing Simplified PHD Dx Inc. (CEO: Dr. George Strobele) is a 11-year-old medical diagnostic company based in Ontario that launched BYOTest® which will now allow clients to book their own screening tests through the internet without a requisition from a physician. Patients can choose among more than 20 different screening and wellness tests available through BYOTest®, using Ultrasonic and laboratory tests. The focus will be on the early detection of cardiovascular disease, hormonal dysfunction and cancer. A bundled package of tests provides detailed information at a cost lower than ordering the tests individually. The Evolution of Medical Tests The self-care revolution started with blood pressure machines in pharmacies, then in the home and expanded to over-the-counter lab tests which started with home pregnancy tests and ovulation predictors, have proliferated over the past few years and now include tests for drug screenings, cholesterol, colorectal cancer, HIV, blood thinning, diabetes, etc. Some patients order tests solely for their own information, while many discuss the results with their physician. Even those patients who do not discuss test scores during office visits may benefit at some point in the future from having a personal health record showing how the results of periodic wellness screenings have changed over time. Cost-Conscious and Health-Conscious Patients typically have to pay out of pocket for tests they seek out themselves, whereas doctor-ordered tests are more likely to be reimbursed by insurers. Patients with health savings accounts (HSAs) and flexible spending accounts, by contrast, can use them to pay for self-ordered lab tests. Consumers Refuse to Be Left Out of the Process Why are many Canadians demanding new options in health care? They are not prepared to put up with a system that is built on long waits and impersonal service. The current "Assembly-Line" model of health care rewards physician on the basis of the number of patients they see. The informed consumers ask questions, demand timely care and seek second opinions, all of which slow down assembly process. It has little to no room in the current system for today's educated patient or information-savvy consumer who is smart enough to know that screenings allow health problems to be identified early, when treatment and changes in lifestyle can be the most effective and least costly.
